Many theorists and researchers such as Montessori and Deci have pointed out that rewards undermine children's intrinsic motivation based on the controlling nature of rewards. However, many parents are still using rewards due to a lack of knowledge and a shortage of resources that provide alternatives to the use of rewards at home. Therefore, this project was intended to create a handbook for parents who have elementary school aged children and want to develop skills to avoid the use of rewards in parenting. According to the feedback from parents and Montessori teachers, this handbook provides resources that support parents to create an intrinsically motivating home environment and to assist children in developing a sense of autonomy, competence, and relatedness.
