Thesis (M.S.)--University of Alaska Anchorage, 2015.
This evaluation integrated an air dispersion model, AERMOD, a geographic information system (GIS) package, ArcGISRTM, and the Air Quality Index (AQI) to simulate air pollution dispersion and to create a visual tool showing the hypothetical maximum health impacts associated with a stationary source in Alaska's North Slope Borough for four pollutants: NOx, CO, SO2, and PM10. The loose integration (coupling) of the modeled data with GIS mapping capabilities provides a relatively simple and feasible method for health scientists to take advantage of both air dispersion modeling data and GIS mapping capabilities to create visualization tools. The goal of this research was to develop a series of maps to be used as a public health tools displaying the hypothetical worst-case scenario for acute health impacts associated with the air pollution emitted from a local facility in close proximity to a community. The maps display the fate and transport of the air pollution once emitted, including both the overall and seasonal maximum air pollution health impacts within the geographic area surrounding the pollution source. To communicate the findings effectively, the maps use a single-source impact index based off of the EPA Air Quality Index color schemes. The trimester in which the air pollution's maximum health impacts were shown nearest to the community was September--December. Overall trends between NOx, CO, SO2, and PM10 show that NOx is the pollutant that has the highest geographical extent and health impact influence.
