The purpose of this study, is to explore the historical role that the independent film sphere has had on the industry and to better understand their influence not just in the past, but in the present as well. Using simple qualitative methods that explored the experiences of several independent film projects that later became successful, we explore how convergent media systems and social media channels like Youtube, Netflix, and Amazon have changed the approach to creating an independent film today. This is done to provide aspiring filmmakers a better understanding of the changes in the industry landscape, so that they can better engage their audience and use channels available to them in order to better engage their audiences and help create or fund their projects. It also serves as a shining light that provides clarity on the kind of influence that independent filmmakers hold today versus what it was in the past.
