I also examine how researchers engage in emotionally laden and potentially traumatic tourism sites.

Drawing upon a multidisciplinary perspective and a multi-method approach, I analyze tourist perceptions and psychology with respect to death rituals within the context of dark tourism in a non-Western setting. Using a psychological measure of death anxiety, I show that tourists have a high fear of death associated with not being able to lead an authentic life which in turn, acts as an underlying factor motivating tourists to travel in pursuit of authenticity.

I propose that the dynamics of tourist-host or tourist-site encounters in dark tourism can be examined by using a heuristic approach that considers the multi-layered dimensions of ontological, cultural, phenomenological and cognitive information at a site. I contend that the notion of sacred in dark tourism is a concept that acts as bridge between different ideological positions and is configured and re-configured spatially, temporally and contextually. The perception of the sacred changes according to the perception of authenticity and has a mobile character.

With respect to the commodification of death and marketing of dark tourism sites, the study shows that the marketing rhetoric has a focus on an 'auratic otherness' and demonstrates euphemistic labelling which is useful for influencing consumer behavior in dark tourism.

Theoretical contributions aside, this research has pragmatic implications that are useful for tourism researchers as through a reflexive account of fieldwork at Varanasi, I present some potential challenges, practical considerations, and emotional consequences of dark tourism research and suggest activities and self-care strategies that can be put into practice.
