Between 1885 and 2016 heritage tourism began and slowly evolved in Ste. Genevieve, the oldest town in Missouri. Ste. Genevieve's current heritage tourism industry developed in four different phases. In the first phase, from 1885 to 1960, Ste. Genevieve discovered that many of its old French Colonial buildings were historically significant. Out of this recognition, Ste. Genevieve developed a heritage tourism industry beginning with the Colonial Dames of America purchasing and restoring the Louis Bolduc House. Ste. Genevieve's heritage tourism industry experienced growth then stagnation in the second developmental phase from 1960 to 1979. Heritage tourism's growth occurred in three areas: the establishment of the Jour de Fete festival, the opening of more historic house museums, and a greater awareness of historic preservation with the formation of the Foundation for the Restoration of Ste. Genevieve in 1967. Stagnation occurred during this period due to the lack of financial resources and a community hesitant about further heritage tourism development. In the third phase of development, from 1980 to 1993, Ste. Genevieve's heritage tourism industry received financial support from local governmental officials, and the industry subsequently began to solve several of its infrastructure needs. Heritage tourism grew in the early to mid-1980s until the obstacles to its growth in the past reappeared in the late 1980s. The Flood of 1993 devastated Ste. Genevieve's heritage tourism industry leaving its future in doubt. Presently, Ste. Genevieve is in the fourth phase of heritage tourism development. From 1994 to the present, heritage tourism received a boost in the form of financial assistance and recognition from prominent individuals, national historic preservation organizations, the National Park Service, as well as an increased awareness from local leaders of its economic value. Consequentially, heritage tourism in Ste. Genevieve today is a viable part of the local economy that has a potential for future growth.
