This study examined the relationship between cumulative childhood maltreatment (CCM) and aggression among young adults. Early maladaptive schemas (EMS) related to disconnection and impaired limits and trauma symptoms were investigated as mediators of this link, while problematic substance use and gender were studied for moderating effects. A total of 349 undergraduate students responded to a questionnaire assessing CCM experiences, EMS, trauma-related symptoms, problematic substance use, and types of aggression (i.e., physical aggression, verbal aggression, anger, and hostility). Multiple moderated mediational and mediational models were conducted. Disconnection emerged as a significant mediator of the relationship between CCM and verbal aggression, anger, and hostility and a marginally significant mediator of the association between CCM and physical aggression. Impaired limits mediated the relationship between CCM and all forms of aggression. This effect was moderated by gender when predicting physical aggression, such that the mediational role of impaired limits on physical aggression was stronger for men than for women. Trauma symptoms mediated the association between CCM and covert aggression (i.e., anger and hostility), but not between CCM and overt aggression (i.e., physical and verbal aggression). Across models, men tended to engage in significantly more physical aggression and slightly more verbal aggression than women. Problematic substance use was a strong predictor of aggression within most models, but did not provide any moderating effects. This study's findings emphasized the importance of early maladaptive schemas among childhood maltreatment survivors, and implications for the treatment of CCM were discussed.
