Recent developments in the field of moral psychology have motivated a great deal of academic work aiming to understand the nature of human morality. Generally, moral psychologists endeavor to understand what psychological and biological principles explain moral beliefs, judgments, and decisions. Communication scholars utilize moral psychology to understand how moral principles influence communication, media uses and gratifications, and how mass communication messages in turn influence moral beliefs, judgments, and decisions. Although this is a rich intersection, it is chaotic. Most communications research does not reflect the theory construction in moral psychology. Rather, communications work is entrenched within a single moral psychological theory, moral foundations theory, as it was one of the most prominent, catalyzing theories that shifted the paradigm.

The current dissertation sought to contribute to work at this intersection in two ways. First, it tests the predictive ability of Haidt's moral foundations theory (MFT) against DeScioli and Kurzban's dynamic coordination theory (DCT) to contribute to the ongoing theoretical construction in moral psychology and to highlight the utility of alternative theories for communications researchers. Second, it investigates the relationship between experiential variables specific to communications research and moral engagement---a nebulous concept in communications research currently under construction.

To accomplish these goals, across two experiments, the current dissertation used a virtual environment to observe how people react to stimuli that simulates social conflict. The manipulations included side-taking (side-taking with traditionalists, side-taking with non-traditionalists, no side-taking), valence (high valence moral conflict, low valence moral conflict), and privacy (private moral positions, public moral positions). Dependent variables included moral positions, moral punishments, moral rewards, and their corresponding motivations. Experiential variables included transportation, affect, and perceived character anthropomorphism.

The findings indicated support for both moral psychological theories suggesting that both may have explanatory power under certain circumstances. Namely, it appears that MFT may explain human morality in the absence of side-taking. However, side-taking leads to more strategic outcomes aligned with DCT that favor social context over personal moral beliefs. The findings surrounding experiential variables suggest robust relationships that allude to a greater construct and calls for a possible reconceptualization of moral (dis) engagement.
