Thesis (Ph.D.)--Iowa State University, 1984.
The problem of this study was to investigate and to compare the economic costs and benefits as well as the noneconomic benefits of the graduates from the cooperative and in-school instructional methods of selected programs in vocational industrial education at the secondary level in Taiwan, The Republic of China. A longitudinal cohort survey was conducted. A questionnaire was developed through a review of literature and on the basis of the researcher's past working experience in vocational education in Taiwan. The graduates of 1977 from both methods were the research population, and the multistage cluster sampling technique was employed to select the sample from the population. This study was conducted in 1984 on the campus of Iowa State University.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Nine hypotheses were tested at (alpha) = 0.05 level. The results are listed as follows: (1) The in-school instructional method had significantly higher costs than did the cooperative instructional method. (2) There was no significant difference between the first five years' earnings of graduates from both instructional methods. (3) The cooperative method had significantly higher net present value of benefits than did the in-school method of instruction. (4) The cooperative instructional method had a significantly higher rate-of-return than did the in-school method of instruction. (5) The cooperative method had a singificantly higher benefit-cost ratio than did the in-school method of instruction. (6) The graduates from the cooperative method had a significantly shorter payback period than did the in-school method of instruction. (7) The noneconomic benefits of graduates from cooperative and in-school methods of instruction indicated no significant differences. (8) The economic and noneconomic benefits of cooperative and in-schhol methods can be predicted based upon the identified factors. (9) There existed a significant linear combination relationship between the economic and noneconomic benefits with ten independent variables. Based upon the above evidence, it was concluded that cooperative instructional method is more cost-benefit effective than the in-school instructional method in selected programs in vocational industrial high schools in Taiwan, the Republic of China.
