Thesis (Psy.D.)--Alliant International University, 2018.
There is significant research that evaluates the impact of vicarious traumatization that can occur in clinicians working with survivors of sexual trauma (Brady et al., 1999; Figley, 1995; Jenkins & Baird, 2002; Pearlman & Mac Ian, 1995; McCann & Pearlman, 1990; Schauben & Frazier, 1995; Wies & Coy, 2013), and there is some research on the impact of sexual trauma on survivors' sexual identity development (Briere, & Eliott, 1994; Crowley, 2000; Finkelhor, 1990; Finkelhor, & Browne, 1985; Kendall-Tackett, Williams, & Finkelhor, 1993; German, Habenict, & Futcher, 1990; Tharinger, 1990). In the research on vicarious traumatization that occurs when working with sexual trauma survivors, there is little to no mention of the impact of this specific kind of clinical work on the therapist's sexual identity and interpersonal relationships. This study sought to address the gap in the research that does not directly evaluate the interpersonal or systemic impacts of working with survivors of sexual assault on the sexual health and relational well being of psychotherapists. This study used a transcendental phenomenological research design to provide rich data about the lived experiences of female therapists who specialized in treating sexual trauma. Results from this study showed that female therapists' sexual identities, intimate partner relationships, and other self-of-the-therapist characteristics were affected by their work with survivors of sexual trauma in ways that were similar to how experiencing sexual trauma affects the sexual identities and relational health of survivors. Clinical implications for therapists working with survivors of sexual trauma and suggestions for educators and supervisors are also discussed.
