Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of California, Davis, 2013.
Features of music, both manually rated and computationally derived, have dominated research on music-evoked emotional experiences. Few studies have attempted to account for individual differences in emotional experiences during music listening, despite compelling evidence that these individual differences exist. Fewer studies still have addressed the role of liking and familiarity in terms of predicting emotional experiences. I propose and directly test a theoretical model that positions liking as a moderator of the influence of computationally derived stimulus features on the emotional state of the listener. I also test the role of affective personality traits as mediators of this moderation relationship. This constitutes the first direct test of the predictive value of liking in this moderation role. It also yields a nuanced story of affective personality traits selectively tuning the relationship between stimulus features, liking, and emotional experience. This work presents a new theoretical framework for considering emotional experiences evoked by popular and familiar music.
