The purpose of this research study was to examine the relationship between music and personality using at least 120 adults ranging from 18 to 30 years of age. Each participant completed the Short Test of Musical Preference as developed by Rentfrow and Gosling (2003) to assess the types of music each participant prefers. Each participant also completed the Big Five Inventory to measure each person's personality make-up. Results from the participants' Short Test of Musical Preference were correlated to the results from the Big Five Inventory. This study also analyzed self-esteem and aggression in relationship to music and personality. To assess aggression, the Buss-Perry scale was used, and to assess self-esteem the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale was used. There were significant relationships found between Energetic/Rhythmic and Extraversion, as well as the correlation between Reflective/Complex and Conscientiousness, and Upbeat/Conventional and Self-esteem. Overall, the results showed that personality and self-esteem could contribute in an individual's musical preferences.
