Thesis (M.A.)--University of Wyoming, 2017.
In the play La casa de Bernarda Alba (1936) by Federico Garcia Lorca (1898--1936), I argue that space produces and is produced by social meaning. Windows and doors---which permeate and disrupt the margins between inside and outside---are representative of social relations of power within the play. These entryways and openings are manipulated and utilized by the female characters in an attempt to shape and challenge space. Bernarda, the mother, controls her house by locking doors and boarding up windows. Adela, Bernarda's youngest daughter, subverts her mother's control through a similar subversion of space. Furthermore, the maid---La Poncia---is able to traverse both space and doorways due to her social status. Ultimately, the space of the house is just a manifestation of societal restrictions and confinement, in which the characters are unable to enact change or control within broader society.
