The dissertation describes how major record companies maintain control over all aspects of music video production including finances, content and access to this media form. The major program services, notably MTV, act as gatekeepers by presenting only certain music videos by selected artists and requiring these videos to comply with their standards. In order to maximize profits, record label exploit music clips in various venues and limit production costs. MTV Networks (MTVN) has developed ancillary markets including program syndication and international ventures.

The music video industry exemplifies all current trends in mass media ownership. Pronounced horizontal integration exists in music programming, primarily due to MTVN's dominant position in this market. The major record companies constitute an oligopoly in the production and distribution of music videos. The major labels and MTV are vertically integrated through contracts providing MTV with exclusive use of a proportion of the labels' videos and the record companies with guaranteed access for a percentage of their videos on MTV. This cooperation has increased horizontal integration in the markets for music video programming and recorded music. MTVN's collusion with the major labels has provided these few companies with substantial power to shape the future direction of American pop music.
