A/r/tography, an arts- and practice-based research methodology that examines the lived experiences of artist educators, was utilized within this study. It draws freely from arts-based and qualitative methods to create customized transdisciplinary access to the research topic. As an emergent and living inquiry, new data or interests may influence research direction.

The researcher, with 5 years of experience in a/r/tography, served as both facilitator and the principle research tool. The research question is as follows: How can the lens of a/r/tography illuminate the ways in which members of a small group of rural Arkansas artists enhance their sense of self-discovery and community alignment through individual and collaborative imaginal experiences?

Participants were respondents to an invitation shared with the visual artist community in north central Arkansas. The initial fieldwork was conducted over a 6-week period in 2013. Data collection was achieved by direct observation, surveys, in-depth personal interviews, and access to pre-existing artifacts. The study culminated in a day retreat held at Arkansas State University Mountain Home, where participants presented additional data in the form of new artwork, stories of creative and operation process, and group discussion.

The participants consider art-making a principle focus of their work and their vehicle for exploration and meaning-making within the imaginal process. Working with topics of lived experience, they drew from their overlapped identities to reveal insights discovered within liminal space. Each reported amplified awareness of the significance associated with those encounters. Likewise, they universally experienced an increased sense of satisfaction both personally and professionally, which strengthened their interwoven identity as artists/researchers/teachers.
