The sign or Zeichen can be traced as a specific concern in Novalis' writings from 1795 to 1800, from his earliest philosophical notebooks to the unfinished novel, Heinrich von Ofterdingen. Although Novalis develops a theory of the sign and applies it to diverse fields, no study of Novalis' writings has yet concentrated on his semiotic theory. This dissertation seeks to lay out Novalis' initial elaboration of the sign, to demonstrate the interrelation of Novalis' theory of representation and his experiments with genre, and to illustrate the importance of the sign in Novalis' political theory.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Chapter One focuses on Novalis' earliest writings on the sign in the Fichte-Studien (1795-96). There Novalis elaborates the sign as arbitrarily determined in relation to a signified and signifier (das Bezeichnete and das Bezeichnende). Novalis draws on Fichte's presentation of the sign in "Von der Sprachfahigkeit und dem Ursprung der Sprache" (1795), but simultaneously undermines Fichte's claims for the signs of philosophical discourse. The Fichte-Studien approaches philosophy as a form of fiction and anticipates Novalis' increasing output of fiction after 1796.

Chapter Two surveys the impact of Novalis' theory of representation on his experimental works of 1797-98: Die Lehrlinge zu Sais, the Dialogen, Monolog, Bluthenstaub, and Glauben und Liebe. Over these two years Novalis increasingly comes to value language's inability to represent Nature as its peculiar excellence. His use of genre reflects and develops the problem of representation as it is explicitly discussed in these works.

Chapter Three investigates the importance of signs for political regimes in Heinrich von Ofterdingen (1799-1800). The novel's Atlantis story and "Klingsohrs Marchen" elaborate how signs function in establishing or continuing lines of legitimate political succession. In response to Plato's Republic and the later Platonic accounts of Atlantis, Heinrich von Ofterdingen treats political legitimacy as an illusion based on the power of signs.
