520 $a Objective: To determine the sodium knowledge of heart failure (HF) patients and their adherence to the low-sodium diet (LSD) before and after an education session with a Registered Dietitian (RD).
520 $a Design: Quasi-experimental, one-group, pre-test post-test design conducted in 20122015, including an education session at baseline, and follow-up after an average of 5 months.
520 $a Participants: HF patients from an outpatient clinic (n=114). Of 114 patients, 71 patients completed both the initial and follow-up visits.
520 $a Intervention: Estimated 15-minute individualized nutrition education with printed handouts conducted by an RD at initial visit.
520 $a Main Outcome Measures: Sodium knowledge measured by Parkland Sodium Knowledge Test. Sodium intake measured by 29-item food frequency questionnaire created by Nutrition Quest(c).
520 $a Analysis: Chi-square, Mann-Whitney or t tests for baseline data; Wilcoxon signed-rank, paired t, and McNemar tests for change in median knowledge score, mean sodium intake, and components of the Parkland, respectively.
520 $a Results: Most patients were middle aged, male, non-Hispanic Black with an education level of greater than 12 years, and New York Heart Association Class of H or III. Of all 114, 66.7% were considered knowledgeable and 34.2% were considered accordant to the LSD. Following RD education, there was a 25% improvement in procedural and factual sodium knowledge and a 500 mg reduction in sodium intake (n=71).
