The Lakota Language Program at Red Cloud Indian School has developed and implemented a comprehensive K-12 Lakh˘ota language curriculum--- Mah˘piya Luta Lakh˘ol Wauetaspewic˘hakhiyapi ---to produce fluent speakers. The purpose of this case study was to determine whether the Lakota Language Program is effective in producing fluent Lakh˘ota language speakers at Red Cloud Indian School. I provided responses to two research questions: (1) What is the level of fluency of students who completed levels I, II, and III of the Lakh˘ota Mah˘piya Luta Lakh˘ol Wauetaspewic˘hakhiyapi (LLP) curriculum, and (2) What is the program administrator, personnel, and teacher perception of the Mah˘piya Luta Lakh˘ol Wauetaspewic˘hakhiyapi (LLP) curriculum? Interviews were the primary source of data for this study.

Qualitative data was used to reconstruct the process and procedures for successful language teaching through in-depth semi-structured interviews. An open-coding format was used to address the research questions in this study. The interviews were conducted with select individuals who designed and/or implemented the curriculum, the Lakota Language Program teachers, personnel, and administrator.

The results of this study, according to interview participants and supporting pre- and post-test data, revealed that the Mah˘piya Luta Lakh˘ol Wauetaspewic˘hakhiyapi curriculum is an effective teaching tool in producing language speakers who are proficient in the Lakh˘ota language. The results also reveal that an on-going teacher training program in effective strategies for second language learning, specific to Lakh˘ota language instruction, will contribute to the success of Lakh˘ota language fluency.
