Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Pennsylvania State University, 2016.
In the Republic of Korea (ROK)1 and the United States, in an education landscape where university enrollment and tuition is high, working students2 are a prevalent student population. Juggling academic and professional responsibilities may affect student performance, access and persistence, making this issue an important target public policy topic for policymakers and Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). And like any other college student, working students have gone through a college decision-making process in their high school years that have led them to a particular university. Using Hossler and Gallagher's model of college choice (1987) as a foundation, this study examines work from two different perspectives, as an input and output at three different points---10 th grade, 12th grade and first year in college in order to understand how work intersects with education. First, I examine the effects of work in high school on future educational expectations and the probability of student's working in college. In addition, factors influencing the likelihood of being a working student are investigated. Results indicate that work experience has an effect on student's educational expectations, particularly for students in Korea. Also, working in high school in their last year increased student's likelihood of being a working student in college. Further, within each country context, working and non-working students attribute different factors in searching and choosing colleges.
