Thesis (M.S.)--State University of New York at Binghamton, 2017.
This thesis focuses on a warehouse facility that supports a manufacturing plant by housing the spare parts and material necessary for production. In order to keep up with the rising competition in the industry and out-perform competitors, the warehouse must perform all its operations, i.e. receiving, put-away, picking, and shipping in a timely manner to ensure smooth functioning of the supply chain. Order picking has been recognized as one of the most challenging activities in terms of time, labor and cost for most warehouses, since order fulllment has a denite time constraint that is predened by the customer. Any decit in the process of order picking at the warehouse level consequently impacts the entire supply chain. This study addresses the problem of routing optimization for order picking in a typical warehouse as a special case of the vehicle routing problem. An optimal route is obtained by formulating the problem as a special case of the vehicle routing problem. This problem is solved using Julia for Mathematical Programming. The optimal route obtained is then compared to the routes obtained by theoretical strategies such as S-Shape, Return, Mid-Point, Largest Gap. by means of simulation and output analysis. The simulation model is developed using Visual Basic for Applications and Microsoft Excel. This study also provides a comprehensive understanding of the important aspects of a simulation study. The various steps involved in a sound simulation study are carried out. Finally, the output of all strategies is studied by means of statistical analysis. The strategy that minimizes total travel time, and consequently the costs associated with order picking, is chosen as the best strategy.
