An exploration of global consciousness subsequent to a critical service-learning study abroad program in Danang, Vietnam, is the focus of this dissertation. This research investigated how former program participants described their experiences integrating global consciousness at different points post-sojourn. Eight in-depth interviews generated rich data around the themes (a) Grief is Central, (b) Ancient Future, and (c) Being informs Doing. The primary findings validate the centrality of grief in the integration process; however, participants also revealed that grief was an existential aspect of love, that when accepted, allowed them to perceive things as they are. Three aspects describe the concept of Ancient Future. One, participants identified a sense of alienation from authentic living. Two, former sojourners described a cosmic consciousness where they recognized that as humans, we are interconnected with all life forms. Third, participants accepted the basic fact that to be human is to suffer. Non-dual ways of thinking were prominent in the second and third aspects and contributed to the third theme, being informs doing. Despite post-sojourners holding conventional views of globalization, non-dual ways of thinking manifested through actions that were expressions of being rather than reactions to oppressive systems. The themes, ancient future and being informs doing herald a spiritual turn of transformative learning theory where non-dual ways of thinking existed alongside dualistic thinking and were not in contradiction with one another.
