Thesis (M.A.)--State University of New York at Binghamton, 2016.
Most research in English on women warriors in premodern Japan has been focused on the examination of singular entities and/or events, with little energy spent attempting an approach to the phenomenon as a contained and unified topic. The goal of this work is to help produce a more accurate picture of the historic involvement of women and to characterize the manner in which the subject was viewed. To accomplish this task, this work examines a variety of historical and representative materials including archaeological data, Empress Jingu (Kojiki and Nihongi), Hangaku Gozen (Azuma kagami), the Joshigun (Boshin War), Tomoe Gozen (Heike monogatari), and Hagakure, among others. It was found that the notion of women participating in combat had been a concept consistently accepted as truth both historically and artistically. However, patriarchal sentiments tempered their identities as warriors both historically and in representative form with a pattern of ambivalence and dichotomy.
