The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between creative thinking abilities and culture, study level, and gender in Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) students in American and Chinese universities. This study was a cross-sectional comparative study with creative thinking test scores as dependent variables and culture, study level, and gender as independent variables. The subjects were 420 PETE students from four American and Chinese universities. Creative thinking abilities were measured by Thinking Creatively with Pictures, Form A, from the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking series. The results were analyzed by independent t-tests for culture and gender differences and analysis of variance for differences in study levels. No significant differences were found between American and Chinese students on the Composite Score. However, there were cultural differences in creative thinking style. American students scored significantly higher than their Chinese counterparts on the Elaboration subscale, while some Chinese subgroups achieved significantly higher scores on Fluency and Originality There were no significant differences among the five study levels (freshmen, sophomore, junior, senior, and masters) on creative thinking test scores in American PETE students or among the Chinese four undergraduate levels. However, Chinese graduate students scored significantly higher than their undergraduate counterparts on all four subscales and the composite score. Gender was not a significant factor on creative thinking test scores for the Chinese group, but American female subjects scored significantly higher than their male counterparts on the Elaboration subscale.Subjects--Topical Terms:
