This dissertation is a textual study of a portion of the silk manuscript titled "Zhanguo zonghengjia shu," excavated from the Mawangdui tomb site in Changsha, Hunan province, China. The text has 27 accounts altogether. This study deals with the 11 of them for which we find matching counterparts in the received texts, namely Zhanguo ce and Shiji.Subjects--Topical Terms:

520 $a One of the purposes of this dissertation is to disclose what the original text said. This is approached by comparing the manuscript to the received counterparts, and by determining the proximate original when the versions display variations. For this purpose I have relied on the textual lineage of the transmission as it can be established for each account, and have taken overall context into consideration.
520 $a A second purpose is to account for the nature of the textual variations and their causes. The categories of variation are graphic, lexical, vacant and transpositional.
520 $a Graphic variation is caused by the particular stage of the writing system observed in the manuscript, in which proper nouns and abstract words were often allowed to be written in a non-standard way in the absence of any fixed rule for making semantic distinctions through the use of classifiers. Lexical variation occurs for the most part when a difficult, original word was changed to an easier word, a taboo character was avoided, or a character was mistaken for another character that was graphically similar. The main cause of vacant variation is either intentional addition made to the original text in order to explicate the matter, or accidental deletion of the words from the original text. Transpositional variation can be due to the displacement of original materials, or to mistaken memory regarding the order of the parallel phrases.
520 $a The result of this work reveals the errors of the transmitted versions of the accounts, and shows how the traditional methods of textual criticism must be modified and elaborated to be applicable to Chinese texts.
