China is the first centrally planned economy to encourage the development of securities markets. This study examined China's emerging securities market to find out what factors stimulated the development of the market and what the characteristics of the market are. It was based on studies of other emerging securities markets in developing countries and takes into consideration China's particular situation. Issuing enterprises were surveyed via mail questionnaires, and the staff of the trading center and officials with regulatory and administrative responsibilities were interviewed.Subjects--Topical Terms:

520 $a The study focused on the following aspects of China's securities market: (1) the driving force behind the emergence of the market; (2) characteristics of the market, including those of market participants, the primary market, and the secondary market; and (3) factors that restrain market expansion.
520 $a It is found that China's securities market is still at a very primitive stage. The current practices and procedures for new issues and the transfer of old issues are very different from those of other countries. However, the unique practices and procedures so far adopted by the Chinese have proved to be indispensable as China's economy moves from a centrally planned economy to a mixture of planning and market.
