Thesis (Ph.D.)--Cornell University, 1989.
This study will evaluate the roles of Western-trained engineers in the historical process of industrialization. My approach is based mainly upon the cases of four engineers, Zhan Tianyou, Fan Xudong, Hou Debang and Hu Guangbiao. They made creative efforts to apply their professional knowledge and skills to serve their country, to adapt western ways to Chinese society and to gain cooperation from the government. They achieved prominence in their fields and contributed to the professionalization of engineering which is an essential aspect of industrialization. Political and social interference, however, handicapped this independent development of the profession which was necessary for the vigorous and institutional development of engineering. The growing process of the profession, therefore, has a long-term history of struggle for autonomy from the government.Subjects--Topical Terms:
