Thesis (Ph.D.)--California School of Professional Psychology - Berkeley/Alameda, 1989.
Investigated the vocational interests of 60 Chinese and Japanese (i.e., Asian) American immigrant, 60 Asian American U.S. born, and 60 White college student men and women. Data from the Strong-Campbell Interest Inventory were collected from the archive files at a university counseling center, and comparisons were made on Holland's RIASEC categories. As predicted, the Asian American students scored higher than the White students on the Conventional category, and the women scored higher than the men on the Social and Artistic categories, while the men scored higher on the Realistic category. Unexpectedly, both the Asian Americans (versus Whites) and the women (versus men) scored higher on the Enterprising category. No differences were found between the Asian American immigrant and U.S. born groups. The results provide current information on the vocational interests of Asian Americans and women. This information is useful for college personnel because they must adapt to the changing needs of ethnic minorities and women on campus. Implications for future research are discussed.Subjects--Topical Terms:
