Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Wisconsin - Madison, 1989.

This study centers on Chang Yueh (667-731) and the High T'ang (713-65)--a poet rarely discussed for his literary stature, working in a period of great complexity. Since the time of Kao Ping (1350-1423), who first clearly established the four periods of T'ang poetry, Chang Yueh has always been considered an Early T'ang poet. By exploring the relationships and interactions between him and his milieu, this study views him in a new light: as the last poet of the Early T'ang and the first poet of the High T'ang. So intimately does he connect with the latter that his contributions to it simultaneously emerge as its principal features. The political alliance between Chang Yueh and Emperor Hsuan-tsung resulted in the maturation of the High T'ang about the year 727. Chang Yueh's influence was additionally spread by the more than twenty major literary men who enjoyed his patronage. But the greatest significance lies in his success, based on the efforts of his predecessors and contemporaries, in developing what came to be the High T'ang style, both theoretically and practically. Chang Yueh set forth its two main standards: feng-ku (vigorous style) and sheng-lu (metrical regulations) and successfully combined them in his own poems.Subjects--Topical Terms:

520 $a In order to arrive at these conclusions, this study employs a fairly wide range of literary and historical methods. A reconstruction of the cultural environment aims at presenting a new picture of the time, and making clear the roles of individuals at this precise point in Chinese cultural history. Re-classification of poets and genres allows for a new examination of several basic concepts of the T'ang period. Tracing the conceptual development of sheng-lu and feng-ku directs us to their convergence, the flowering of the High T'ang. These elements, intersecting and interweaving, form a new perspective on Chang Yueh and the High T'ang.
