Adult education in China has been a long history, taking as its primary focus the work of popularizing basic knowledge of culture. Changes are now taking place because of the current technological revolution. The evolution of adult education against a backdrop of technical advances provided the focus for this project. The study examines three general questions: (1) What are the significant events in the recent history of adult education in China? (2) What are the current scientific and technological changes affecting the purposes and methods of adult education in China? (3) What is the future of adult education in China in view of the rapid scientific and technological evolution?Subjects--Topical Terms:

This study was conducted in China using a participatory research method. Conversations focused on dialogue for the exchange of information and for creating new understandings. Information was grouped into three categories relating to adult education: the history; the current scientific and technological changes; the future of adult education. Methodology included: developing interview questions; selecting people for interviews; requesting interviews through letters of introduction; conducting interviews; reflecting on accuracy of the notes; transcribing interviews from notes and recordings; analyzing data. Data was analyzed using hermeneutics and critical theory and includes discussion of the fusion of horizons, specifically the imperative for Chinese leadership to more fully interpret the past against the present economic and political backdrop in order to direct the future.

China is in a period of transition. The importance of new technology is acknowledged, but there is an imperative to utilize existing workers. China's current technological evolution is tied to China's emerging attitude toward competition and capitalism. Adult education will continue to respond to the objectives of eliminating illiteracy and to scientific and technological change. An interdependency between East and West in terms of technology will gain permanence only when there is an understanding of one another's histories.

Education will be a determinant in the full development of China--socially, politically, economically. The implications from this project are: (1) further interpretation of the data; (2) future studies in education in China and other Asian countries; and (3) other researchers who may elect a similar mode of research.
