This study of the Erlitou Site gathers various coincident primary source materials to demonstrate the contemporaneity of late Xia and early Shang dynastic kings. Chapter I assembles ancient textual and archaeological evidence to identify the #2 Palace Remains of the Henan Province Yanshi Erlitou Site as the Xia ancestral worship temple and altar built upon by the founder of the Shang Dynasty, Chengtang. Chapters II and III compare the latest and earliest stratigraphic remains of the #2 Palace Remains with the earliest and latest remains of the Henan Province Yanshi Shang City and the Luoyang Cuoli sites. By so doing, Chapters II and III work with Chapter I to establish provenance for the carbon-14 date-ranges and associated regional pottery sequence seriation analyzed in Chapter IV; in addition, the dates are compared to recent determinations of the exact dates of astronomical events recorded as having occurred during the Xia dynastic era. As a whole, the comparative work of Chapters I-IV demonstrates reasons to consider "Neolithic" archaeological sites in central China as Xia and Shang Dynastic and Pre-dynastic cultural remains. Chapter V examines excavated artifacts in order to substantiate ancient textual records asserting that, having destroyed the Xia Dynasty, the founder of the Shang Dynasty seized the Xia dynastic imperial jade pieces. The evidence demonstrates the contemporaneity of late Xia and early Shang dynastic kings. Chapter VI presents the results of the experimental testing of a jade tablet with a "Bird Trace Script" inscription. It gathers traces of pre-Shang forms of writing from extant inscriptions and the ancient textual record, and compares these traces with the inscription on the tested piece.Subjects--Topical Terms:
