Research process. This study uses a participatory interpretive process (Gadamer 1975, 1976; Ricoeur 1981; Habermas 1971, 1973, 1979, 1984; Heidegger 1971) to create a contextual framework for understanding the phenomenon of upward movement among Chinese in corporate settings. Twelve top-level executives in China and eight in the United States participated in this study. The participatory process allows researcher and research participants to critique underlying assumptions and actions that influence upward movement in corporate organizations. Through self-reflection and discourse created by the research process, potential is generated for making personal and organizational changes.

Results. Findings reveal that participants in the United States are less influenced by technocratic ways of thinking and acting than the Chinese managers in China. Managers influenced by alternatives to technocratic thinking ground their practices in communicative competence that expand possibilities for integrating personal and organizational meaning systems. With rapid economic, social, cultural and political changes taking place in China, thinking and actions of most participants in China are dominated by economic improvement and western technical know-how.

Conclusions. Upward movement of Chinese in corporate settings in both countries is influenced by socioeconomic and political imperatives. Conditions for upward movement may be created through cross-cultural and global perspectives integrated in management curricula. Management education predicated on multi-national perspectives foster potential for personal and organizational transformations appropriate for an interdependent economy.
