Thesis (Ph.D.)--Georgetown University, 1987.
Po Chu-i (772-846) was the most prolific realistic poet of the T'ang Dynasty. He followed the spirit of the Shih-ching (Book of Odes) using a writing style that was pleasing and easily read by the people to create more than 3,000 poetic works. In these poetic works, he faithfully depicted episodes of his own life and recorded in detail scenes from China's political, social, and everday life during the 8th and 9th centuries. Quite apart from their literary value, his poems have significance for historians for they create in verse vivid pictures of historical events during the T'ang period.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Po Chu-i was born to a poor family with literary fame. From his youthful days, he showed great intelligence and diligence. At the age of 15, he began creating poetic works, and subsequently became an official by passing three imperial examinations to enter the Imperial Court of the T'ang Dynasty. Because of his family background, Po had a special understanding of the life and hardships of the common people.

His representative work, "A Song of Unending Sorrow," described the Imperial Court, the Emperor, and the internal chaos during the T'ang Dynasty. It was a love story of the times and included the thinking of Buddhist and Taoist devotees. His other representative work, "The Song of a Guitar," described the life of the common people suffering under a feudal social system.

Po Chu-i was not only a great poet, but he also gave a new direction to the literature of the T'ang Dynasty. He used poetic works to report on practical reality and set forth in his writings a historical record of the T'ang Dynasty. Po opened the road to vernacular literature and through his writings afforded art, literature, and education to the common people of his time. Po Chu-i is not only an immortal poet but also a writer of great value to historians.
