Major findings include (1) Most women (95.1%) used prenatal checkups, but only 26.1% attended prenatal classes; almost all (99.0%) of the respondents delivered their babies in a medical setting, but relatively fewer women (74.9%) used postnatal checkups. (2) Although very few women used Chinese-style prenatal medical care, many were concerned about pregnancy taboos. After the birth, almost all of the women used Chinese-style postnatal care, "doing the month." (3) Locality SES did not make a difference in women's use of pre- and postnatal checkups, but it was related to attendance of prenatal classes. (4) Only receptivity of traditional health beliefs was associated with prenatal care utilization patterns. Some demographic factors (respondent SES, education), one access factor (waiting time), and some health concept and behavior factors (concerns about pregnancy taboos, regular use of physical checkups) were associated with postnatal checkups at a statistically significant level. (5) Some personal and organizational rather than financial factors appear to be deterrents to the use of pre- and postnatal care.
