Thesis (D.Mis.)--Fuller Theological Seminary, School of World Mission, 1985.
This dissertation is a historical and comparative study of leadership selection processes emerging from the Chinese context. The four leaders to be studied are: John Sung, David Yang, Watchman Nee and Wang Ming Tao. They were all contemporaries in age and exercised their leadership amidst the strains of national and religious life in China during the first half of the twentieth century. But while most Chinese Church members know them as spiritual giants who courageously served Christ with a sacrificial spirit unexcelled in any period of China's Church history, few are aware of the factors which converge to create such dynamic ministries by which tens of thousands have been blessed. It is to this end that the study is devoted.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The research approach first examines four Biblical perspectives on leadership selection, namely--spiritual gifts, servanthood, spiritual authority and formation, and then moves on to a discussion of Clinton's theory of leadership selection processes. The concept of processing covers foundational, inner-life growth, guidance, ministry and maturity factors. Identifications of time-line, process items in developmental phases and sub-phases, leadership principles in correlated processes, roles and spheres of influence are made here. Major Chinese cultural factors and historical context influencing indigenous leadership emergence patterns are then investigated to enhance the clarity of the foundational framework in which the next section is based.

The latter section explores the various leadership emergence patterns of the four leaders on an individual basis using both direct (biographies and autobiographies) and indirect data (recorded sermons, books, articles, magazines, interviews, etc.) Leadership levels and formation factors, clergy-laity relationships, the impact of modelling and training methods in contrast to missionary and denominational orientations are examined within the context of leadership development and Church growth.

The dissertation concludes with a corporate comparison of the four Chinese leaders, their significant and unique contributions as based on their distinct personality and leadership styles that have made their marks in different ways in the total life of the Christian Church in China. In retrospect, major implications and lessons are drawn from the study for the future development and training of more competent national leadership.
