The Sino-foreign Joint Venture Law was issued by the Chinese government on July 1, 1979, opening China's door to direct investment by the West. During the past seven years, the joint venture has become a major form of Chinese-foreign economic co-operation in China. 520 $a This paper plans to explore the policies relating to foreign investments in China, placing special emphasis on the joint venture. Some of the issues which will be addressed are: What guidelines will be used to conduct joint ventures in China? What difficulties will joint ventures encounter in the short term? How will joint ventures affect the overall Chinese economy and what specific roles will joint ventures assume in the future? An Open-door policy is the basic state policy of China. We conclude that China's joint ventures still need time to develop, but will steadily expand in the coming future.
