Thesis (M.A.)--Pacifica Graduate Institute, 2017.
This thesis addresses the question of how different developmental, emotional, and relational expectations in girls and boys later affect how adult heterosexual partners come into and stay in relationship. Using hermeneutic methodology, psychological and sociological research on raising boys and girls in a patriarchal American society to fulfill separate roles and develop diverging emotional and relational skills is explored. Several couples therapy modalities chosen for their attention to differences in gender are discussed, noting how they attempt to bridge the gender gap and better align partners' emotional understanding and experiences. Using heuristic methodology, the author's personal story of growing up in a patriarchal family and taking on traditional female roles is presented, providing insight into how her own needs were secondary to the needs of husband, children, and family of origin. The ensuing marital distress and divorce are explored through feminist and relational lenses, highlighting clinical applications in couples therapy.
