Thesis (M.S.)--University of California, Davis, 2017.
Although a "duty-free" break is required per federal law (United States Department of Labor, 2015), nurses often work long shifts with little to no periods of break relief (Dorrian et al., 2006). The effects of not receiving these breaks not only harm the nurse's physical and mental health, but can lead to patient harm (Scott, Hofmeister, Rogness, & Rogers, 2010). Decreased situational awareness and fatigue can be detrimental to patient care as well as the nurse's overall morale. The intent of this work is to further explore nurse's perspectives on mandated meal and break periods (MBP) at work and barriers to taking MBPs. Additionally, to examine the best practices in regards to MBP's that meet the needs of all parties involved in this complex topic.
