Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Claremont Graduate University, 2016.
It is widely assumed as a matter of logic that, as articulated by Bertrand Russell, since the great world religions disagree, not more than one of them can be true. Yet, this is the very assumption that theories of religious pluralism seek to challenge, and the very core of what this dissertation seeks to explore. How do pluralistic theories work? What are the philosophical foundations for religious pluralism? What sort of framework is necessary to reconcile contradictory truth claims? In this dissertation, such questions are explored through a cross-cultural (comparative) exercise between Western discourse on religious pluralism and Eastern discourse on the same---namely, through the tradition of Jainism. The Jain doctrine of relativity serves as a window into Indian philosophy and Eastern perspectives toward paradox, truth, and difference. Through this exercise in comparative religious philosophies, the dissertation concludes with a deeper analysis of paradoxical thinking (East & West), ultimately arguing that paradoxical thinking is an essential means of reconciling contradictions, which serves as the foundation for more robust theories of religious pluralism.
