The objective of this investigation was to synthesize and modify Pd doped ceria with surface treatment procedures, including RF non-thermal plasma techniques, to form Pd single atoms on the surfaces of Pd-ceria catalysts with desired surface properties for selective hydrogenation of acetylene in ethylene. The selective hydrogenation of acetylene in ethylene is a critical process of the ethylene industry, producing the largest building block of the chemical industry. The properties we aimed to control include the selective reduction of surface layers of PdCeO2 solid solution, formation of Pd single atoms on ceria surfaces with specific interaction with ceria support, and oxygen vacancy distribution on ceria. With calcination and non-thermal RF H2 plasma treatment, a SMSI effect occured and the conversion and selectivity of the PdCeO2 catalysts were both improved.
