In recent years, the topic of bullying has gained national attention due to its impact on mental health, more specifically an increase in news stories about children committing suicide due to being bullied and the recognition that bullying impacts a child's future success. Due to this increased awareness, state legislatures created anti-bullying laws to help public schools combat the bullying problem. Some states have strong anti-bullying laws, while others have weak anti-bullying laws; however, even the strong laws appear to have a small impact on decreasing the amount of bullying occurring. This dissertation reviews certain strong, weak, and special consideration states anti-bullying laws and makes recommendations about how schools can improve the types of interventions used to decrease bullying.
