The purpose of this phenomenological study was to examine long-term grief in those who experienced the death of a parent during childhood. Interviews were conducted with 12 individuals, aged 20 to 51, who experienced parental death as children. Grief was defined as the ongoing emotional response to the death of the parent: by this definition, all participants seemed to continue to grieve the loss of their parent. Ongoing participant grief was examined through the lens of attachment theory, and analysis was performed through the use of Moustakas'(1994) transcendental phenomenology. Through the employment of the data analysis steps of phenomenological reduction and imaginative variation, three essential themes emerged from participant interviews. The essential themes were: (a) grief does not end, but transforms over time, (b) the grief experience is inextricably bound to attachment needs, and (c) the ability to move through grief is tied to developmental maturity and increased self-efficacy. Clinical implications for the field of couples and family therapy are discussed as are suggestions for future research.
