Thesis (M.A.)--Mills College, 2015.
The purpose of this case study was to examine how multicultural education was conducted at one urban private school in San Francisco that serves grades Kindergarten-8 grade. Through observations and interviews with the teachers, parents and students at this school, I aimed to document and reflect on how the school implements multicultural education and to describe its success or challenges in the day to day activities throughout the school year. Further, I sought to examine the interviewees' ideas of what multicultural education was, any training they had on multicultural education, and reflect on how their understandings may or may not align with my own. Several areas of literature informed the data analysis including Rogoff's discussion of sociocultural theory as well as Banks' work on multicultural education. The data were analyzed using analytic memos and inductive and deductive coding. Findings suggest that the school did implement some of the aspects of multiculturalism including discussion of different family constellations, the many ways students can learn, and students' diverse cultural and economic backgrounds. However, the school lacked a focus on other main aspects of multicultural education including discussion on family culture and community involvement.
