Thesis (M.A.)--Kean University, 2014.
Not all parents support the completion of homework on a regular basis, and not all students believe there is a benefit to completing homework at all; yet, the majority of teachers maintain that homework is essential in reinforcing the skills and concepts being taught during the school day since there just isn't enough time to do it all in class. Therefore, this research will focus on homework completion and its effects on student readiness and performance. The subject's seventh grade math classes are required to complete homework on a nightly basis. Homework is checked for completeness, but not for accuracy. It is then discussed as a whole-group. Students are likely to fall into one of the following categories . . . student completes their homework regularly, and to the best of their ability; student completes their homework regularly, but does not put forth an optimal amount of effort, as they know it will not be graded; student does not complete their homework on a regular basis This research began with a student survey in an attempt to identify which of the aforementioned categories the student felt that they fell into. Later, a randomly selected homework assignment was collected from each student and graded for accuracy. This was used to serve as an indicator of student effort. Finally, the data was analyzed from multiple viewpoints. A comparison was made between the responses to the student survey and actual student performance; the present practices of the teacher were investigated to support or negate its success; and, student's viewpoints regarding the benefits of homework were assessed.
