Thesis (M.S.W.)--California State University, Long Beach, 2014.
The purpose of this project was to write a grant to fund an obesity prevention program, entitled, "A Healthier We," for African American children, at the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA in San Diego, California. A literature review was conducted to examine the prevalence, risk factors, and consequences of obesity, with a particular focus on African American communities. A search for potential funding sources resulted in the selection of the California Endowment as the best funding source for the project. The purpose of the program is to reduce the high rates of childhood obesity among African American children in San Diego County by providing African American children and their caregivers with the opportunities to develop new knowledge and skills related to obesity, healthy eating, and physical activity. The actual submission or funding of the grant was not a requirement for the successful completion of the project.
