Thesis (M.S.)--Southwest Minnesota State University, 2012.
This action research project examined athletes' perceptions of autocratic and democratic coaching behaviors used by high school football coaches and their effects on sport satisfaction. This study was completed during the 2011 football season at a rural high school in Southwest Minnesota. The entire varsity football team, 36 players total, as well as the three varsity football coaches participated in this study. Instrumentation included the Coaching Behavior Scale for Sport (CBS-S) survey, a scripted interview questionnaire, and a coaching behavior observation form. Analysis of the data consisted of descriptive statistics using means and standard deviations and t tests to discover significant differences in the survey results. Qualitative data were obtained through the scripted interview questionnaires and were summarized. The findings of the study revealed that, although the data showed that the coaches were mostly democratic throughout the season, the autocratic coaching behaviors were more prominent as the season progressed, and the level of satisfaction among the athletes increased. Results of this study provide information for high school coaches in general, especially football coaches interested in factors that help to determine levels of sport satisfaction.
