Thesis (M.A.)--State University of New York at Buffalo, 2017.
The aim of this study is to examine the gender difference in parental involvements and students' math self-efficacy, and the math self-efficacy's medication effect on the relationship between parental involvements and students' math achievement. To answer these research questions, the data of 10th graders from PISA 2012 was analyzed, and the samples in Hong Kong-China and Korea were superficially chosen to conduct this study. By constructing structure equation models among variables, some significant results were found: there are gender difference in parental involvement and math self-efficacy in both countries, but the mediation effect of math self-efficacy was only found in Korea. In both counties, girls tend to have low math self-efficacy than boys. For parental involvement, parents in both Hong Kong-China and Korea tend to treat girls and boys differently, and the pattern of parental involvement in two countries tend to be similar. Both in Hong Kong-China and Korea, parents tend to be involved more with boys than girls.
