Research has found that African American fathers' contributions to early child development can be hindered by high psychological distress as well as ongoing father-mother friction. Research has also found that African American fathers who react to racism in a maladaptive manner are more likely to have family problems. Inspired by these inquiries, this study examined the relations between parenting stress, partner relationship quality, experiences with racism, and African American fathers' caregiver involvement. The sample consisted of 24 African American fathers who answered a survey in either online or paper format. The survey included a demographic questionnaire, the Parenting Stress Index-Short Form (PSI-SF), Relationship Quality, the Daily Life Experience Scale (DLE), and the Paternal Involvement in Child Care Index (PICCI). The results showed significant associations between experiences with racism and African American fathers' caregiving involvement. There was no statistical power shown among parenting stress and partner relationship quality. Significant associations were also shown between fathers' employment and African American fathers' caregiver involvement. There was no statistical power shown among other paternal demographics. Neither was there statistical power shown among maternal and child demographics. These results indicated that African American fathers who experience more racism and work more hours are less involved in caring for their young children. The limitations of this study and the implications of its findings for infant mental health are discussed.
