Routine, archival data collected during the GUWK program was used. A total of 944 students (58% male, 42% female, Mage = 15) had participated in GUWK screening for depression, anxiety, and self esteem. 71 students participated in the follow-up individual counselling or group counselling component. 76 students received standard care from a school social worker.

All three measurement tools showed high internal consistency. Female adolescents scored significantly higher on depression (t(815) = 2.69, p < 0.01) and anxiety (; t(815) = 3.39, p < 0.01) scales. Results indicate no significant differences between Hong Kong Chinese adolescents and Mainland Chinese new immigrant adolescents. Students who participated in GUWK counselling showed significant improvements in depressed mood (F(1, 145) = 153.73, p < 0.001), reduced anxiety (F(1, 145) = 14.41, p < 0.001), and self esteem (F(1, 145) = 37.21, p < 0.001) compared to students who received standard care (effect sizes).

The KADS, PSWQ-C, and RSE were all found to be reliable tools to investigate depression, anxiety, and self-esteem in adolescents living in Hong Kong. GUWK was shown to produce better results than standard care (i.e. general monitoring by school social worker) with acceptable effect sizes.

Chinese adolescent males were less likely to self-report depression and anxiety, possibly due to traditional Chinese gender roles. Improving methods of screening, increasing the attractiveness of intervention, and greater awareness of mental health issues need to be addressed for teachers and students in secondary schools in Hong Kong.
