Studies examining gender-based violence consistently show that transgender people are at high risk for sexual violence because of their gender expression (Clements-Nolle, Marx, & Katz, 2006; Garofalo, Deleon, Osmer, Doll, & Harper, 2006; Fernandez-Rouco, Fernandez-Fuertes, Carcedo, Lazaro-Visa, & Gomez-Perez, 2016; Kenagy, 2005). Transgender women, in particular, experience sexual violence, including rape, sexual assault, and sexual harassment, at a higher rate than transgender men (Gehring & Knudson, 2005; Shipherd, Maguen, Skidmore, & Abramovitz, 2011; Stotzer, 2009; Todahl, Linville, Bustin, Wheeler, & Gau, 2009). Studies have primarily focused on this population's access to psychological support through traditional social service agencies, but few have focused on their knowledge of and experience with community-based rape crisis centers (Stotzer, 2009; Todahl et al., 2009). This study explores these experiences and considers whether transgender women perceive rape crisis centers, which are traditionally women-focused feminist organizations, to be accessible to transgender women who are victims of sexual violence.

This qualitative study focused on understanding how transgender women conceptualize and experience sexual violence. It also involved the exploration of the participants' knowledge of and perceptions about the ability and willingness of rape crisis centers to provide services to transgender women who are victims of sexual violence.
