Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of California, Irvine, 1999.
This dissertation presents, upon close examination of the nominal structure and the relative clause in Japanese, that (b) the applicability of semantic operations can vary across languages, and that (a) the uniqueness of heads is subject to parametric variation. The investigation is conducted in the principles-and-parameters approach in generative grammar.

This dissertation presents, upon close examination of the nominal structure and the relative clause in Japanese, that (b) the applicability of semantic operations can vary across languages, and that (a) the uniqueness of heads is subject to parametric variation. Chapter 2 and 3 are, concerned with the first hypothesis. In Chapter 2, we examine the distribution and the nature of the particle no in Japanese, and propose a two-way distinction analysis, where no is divided into two basic categories (a genitive marker and a nominalizer). We argue with Chierchia (1998) that the presence/absence of D affects the applicability of semantic operations (type-shifting, specifically). The semantic mechanism we obtain for the nominal expression in Japanese makes it possible to interpret the no-attached phrase without introducing extra devices.

Chapter 3 is devoted to the analysis of relative clauses in Japanese. We argue that the non-movement approach best captures various phenomena related to relativization (e.g., lack of island effects, lack of weak crossover effects, clause bounded nature of adjunct PP relativization). It is shown that the lack of movement process in Japanese is derived from the absence of [+R] complementizer. In parallel to the relation between D and the corresponding type-shifting operation, the presence/absence of relative pronouns/operators in a given language affects the availability of lambda-abstraction in the semantic component in that language. We propose the Generalized Blocking Principle, which is an extension of Chierchia's (1998) Blocking Principle, to capture the interaction between syntactic operations and semantic operations.

Chapter 4 demonstrates that the uniqueness of heads allows parametric variation across languages, based on the properties of Multiple Headed Relatives (MHRs) in Japanese. It is argued that the presence of MHRs in Japanese and their absence in English can be reduced to the presence/absence of the functional category C with a [+R] feature, which requires a one-to-one correspondence between the head and the operator. The Generalized Blocking Principle developed in Chapter 3 provides a desirable account for the differences between English and Japanese.

This dissertation sheds a new light on the hitherto unnoticed phenomena, and makes it possible to understand the diversity across languages from a new perspective.
