Phonetic convergence is a phenomenon by which talkers' speech changes to sound like others. It is typically studied using laboratory tasks, but the extent to which talkers converge varies across studies. One aspect of these tasks that differs from real world settings is how engaging they are. Highly contrived tasks may cause participants to become bored, which could influence whether or not they converge. I have addressed this issue by comparing the extent to which interlocutors converge in a repetitive unengaging task versus a video game-based task. Thirty word-initial voicing minimal pairs were used as stimuli, and the degree to which phonetic cues to voicing (e.g., voice onset time and vowel length) change over the course of the experiment were measured. We found that participants in the more engaging task showed greater convergence (i.e., they gradually shifted their speech to be more similar to the other participant's speech).
